This is a tough read for me especially now. I’ve moved back home (TX) after finishing a Masters in Chemistry and I am struggling to find a job. I’ve applied to a range of them too— and it’s the exact same blueprint: overqualified, under review, etc..

Hey Morgan 👋🏾 this is my piece. I feel your pain. I’m hoping this will encourage us all to use these tools to our advantage and fight back against the oppressor’s. Stay strong 🫶🏾

I appreciate the encouragement, I’m certainly trying my best! My next step is to start researching how to actually use the information these tools give us! 🫶🏾✊🏾

I can relate to this, to a degree. I’ve always said the system uses us — so two can play that game. I learned to work smart, not hard (or create smart, not work hard), because if they’re going to run these games, I’m going to make them work for me instead.

Funny enough, before I moved to Mexico four years ago, I used to put “white” on job applications, half as a joke, half on purpose. Not because I thought it’d get me into some fancy New York job, but because I knew exactly what the filter was looking for. Then I’d walk in, they’d see I was actually overqualified, and, BOOM hired. Thank you very much 💯 Two can play that game, indeed.

Exactly! They are not smarter than us. They’ve been using the same playbook since the beginning. Now we have the tools to use it against them 😤

This hits hard because I too am experiencing this first hand. My job and team “eliminated” almost a year ago I am still struggling to find a job with two Masters degrees, a litany of certifications and 20 years experience. But the answers remain the same… “no”. Overqualified, position filled internally, not the right fit… it’s really exhausting and frustrating.

Hey Emmanuel 👋🏾 Black people are the most qualified in whatever area we’ve studied. I do believe a shift is happening and the future is bright because Black people are in it. Stay strong 🫶🏾

So, this is definitely happening, but what is the end game that two can play? This reads like an article from Captain Obvious for me....what would be helpful is some usable course of action. Should we all just put white now? Because the question on the application is 'what do you identify as' and one could answer 'for purposes of this job, I am white.' It would be even better if we could also throw in being a man, but that's more of a stretch so maybe we won't go down that rabbit hole...

The point of the article is to use the tools currently available to everyone for your own benefit. That is not obvious to everyone, clearly. Common sense ain’t common. The action stage lies within you. Man or woman alike.

Yep, nope still not saying anything substantive. 🙄 There's nothing insightful about saying 'the action stage lies within you' unless you believe Marvel comic lines can help pay bills. Common sense has nothing to do with the jobless situation that over half a million Black women find ourselves in since many of us have taken multiple courses of action without success. When people-man and woman alike-are in survival mode, there is less mental bandwidth to engage in reading between the lines, even among the brightest, most educated and experienced professionals. While some may find simple acknowledgement of the situation encouraging, it comes up empty for others. I have lots of raw data because I track activities related to job searching and have done so since the '08 recession. I am past just wanting to know when it comes to all things in the 'what's going on in this crazy world' category; what I seek more than recitation of problems is discourse in actual SOLUTIONS.

There's nothing more frustrating than being on the receiving end of someone thinking they ate after serving up nothing more than an empty plate.

Congratulations to you. If you’d like to publish all this you can easily submit it to E.N.D 🤷🏾‍♀️

I am not the one professing to be an expert at all these crossroads--that was YOU. 💁🏽‍♀️ This “essay” doesn't convey any actual knowledge that is implied in the title, and because I point it out, you try to come at me? SMH, as I suspected, sounds like yet another self-appointed emperor waving invisible special cloth for clicks and likes…
