The men who actively understand love and ✨worship✨ deserve the love songs, I think. Perhaps that’s the correlation: so few love songs about men because there are so few who are familiar with and enacting that concept.

Thank you for making this point. I think that it's probably easier for some men to translate the genuine affection and care they receive from women into love songs (platonic, familial, or otherwise) because it's often a lived experience. I don't know if I can say the same generally for most women about men. I imagine that to create some of these deep, affectionate lyrics requires the artist to be inspired.

And to that point about lived experience, women tend to be more likely to express the fantasy of that kind of love. The hope and wish of having it SOMEDAY.

I think about Lyzel in E Flat, for example. There’s a reason we still singing that at the top of our lungs. Jill is speaking about a present-tense love. Not a dream or memory of it.

As a man who loves romance in just about every medium, this was a very enlightening read. I’ve seen countless examples of how to love but haven’t seen many of how to be loved as a man. Side note: Deliver us from Eva has the best romantic opening ever captured in film

You raise a good point. Much of the singles that make it to the air waves are not about yearning that special man in your life. However, I will offer this— the songs are out there, mainly album deep cuts. I can think of recent music by Nnavy, Victoria Monet, Ari Lennox and others that deliciously express deep love and passion for the fellas.

Yes! The love is underground and it shouldn’t be

I know what you are saying, just the other day I seen someone speak on this same topic. There's and opening statement “ you're in the world but not caught up in the world.” Computers making songs changing the game. I told my children not to give me a hallmark card because hallmark knows nothing about me. If you have to put how you feel about me on a old torn up brown piece of paper I valued it. Old school men those good brothers may find a old school song play it on the record player, ending in the best song you ever heard on date night. In other words don't force your man to do what you can't do. If you can prove it lol next date night on you. Lol 😂 count your blessings if he's a little country and rock n roll. I personally don't like a brother all worldly.

I feel like the culture simply think it’s not « marketable » and that’s why we don’t hear those songs, and artists aren’t even interested into producing them. Also most happy people seem to be discreet these days, especially in this gender war era. I’ve never ever heard any of these songs. Thank you for this article, it provides an interesting perspective.

The song that stands out to me is In My Mind by Heather Headley…give it a listen!

I can think of so many love songs about men. Oldies, recent ones, and many in between. I don't disagree that men deserve love songs at all; I'm just questioning the idea that the songs don't exist. I think I actually hear fewer of these true love songs directed toward women, but I'm not prepared to stand on that in a debate, so I'll have to think a little harder on it.

To be fair, I'm unfamiliar with the song you mentioned, so I'll check it out and see if perhaps it's just on a different level of love song than I'm considering.
