Chad, I am happy that you, like me, had the gift of having both of your grandfathers in your life. My grandfathers taught me things about life and manhood and the expressing of emotion that my emotionally stunted father could not. My paternal grandfather, they called him Poochie. He was a blues man and would have easily been elected mayor of our community if there were a vote. My mom’s father, I called Pappy. He was a preacher and a loving, sensitive man. He would rise up in the pulpit and sing, “Count your blessings.” Thank you for giving me a moment to reflect on how much they’ve meant to me. Who would we be without them? And I must add, the piece was skillfully crafted!
