Fear and caution are two different things. I don’t fear cars, but I still look both ways before crossing the street. That being said, the internet Monday morning quarter backing his parent’s parenting is perverse.

I think that distinction is fair! Caution is reasonable; omniscience isn’t. What unsettles me is how quickly people turn tragedy into proof that the parents should have somehow anticipated every possible outcome and made the one decision that would have prevented it.

That’s the part that feels perverse to me too.

Hindsight makes people incredibly confident about risks they only recognize because they already know how the story ends.

Beautifully written. Fantastic insight. I’d never heard of E.N.D. It was brought to my attention during a conversation with a friend of mine about what I called BBB’s (bougie brunch Blacks). Our Kind of People. In spite (or because, haven’t decided which) of having grown up around white folks, I wound up at an HBCU and befriended a lot of the summer on the vineyard types. I made a comment about my mixed feeling regarding HBCU’s because while I do feel like the offer valuable experiences and opportunities for our people, I also feel like they take the edge off some of our sharpest minds. Minds that could be used to cut away roots of white supremacy and work towards Black liberation are instead pushed towards MBA’s, Wall Street and Fortune 500 companies. Now, I’m not saying everyone has to adopt the same politic is me. I mean they should but this is a comment not a post though it’s getting long. But what I am saying is that the some of these same wealthy Black folk who become geniuses and have all the answers after Black death, don’t want to devote their time, minds, or resources to combatting the conditions that allow for things like this to happen. So many of us are in pursuit of “the bag” and I get it. We do have to survive. But then what? When you actually have the bread what are you doing to combat the institutions that allow for this shit? I wonder if the people preaching “Black Excellence” and trying to accumulate Black wealth and idolizing Black billionaires ever connect the dots. Those dots being that the same system that allows for your “excellence” and grants your humanity is the one that allows for you to have to give your kids “the talk” or be clairvoyant parents. Until we address the systems and institutions we’re gonna get the same outcomes. So before coming for grieving parents, look at your own politics and see what role they play.

Powerful article and a great dissection on causation, race and the consequences of believing you “belong”. Truly wish we didn’t have to live with this hate on a regular basis and teach our children and communities how to defend themselves against it.

Why wish? Why not tear it down?

A wish is the outcome of a desire – I think everybody wants to burn it down. I am asking for a successful outcome, while understanding we live in the real world and a system is not torn down in a day. Similar to how Rome was not built in a day.

so easy to make a comment and podcast episode around a hot topic (black death) instead of allowing space for the families to navigate and handle the tragedy that's been thrown at their doorstep like am morning newspaper.. sis I hope you and you family receive all the karma yall deserve and know THIS ARTICLE will forever be referenced on "what to do" when (cause it'll happen again unfortunately) black bodies are made examples of... Thanks for reshaping my approach to life and how to support families and people that will need it...
