Films have always been a huge part of my life.
The kind that makes you sit up straighter because you feel seen. The kind that makes you call somebody after because you need to talk about what just happened. The kind that puts language on something you’ve been carrying, quietly, for years.
At E.N.D., we’re storytellers. And I mean that in the old way.
We were raised by parents, pastors, uncles, aunts, grandparents, people who could tell a story so vivid you could see it. Folks who knew how to pause at the right moment. How to build tension without yelling. How to land a punchline and then turn around and land a lesson. Black communities have always been cinematic. We’ve always been directing with our mouths, editing with our hands, scoring with our voices.
So when I hear people talk about “Black cinema” like it’s a genre, like it’s a side category I already know what time it is.
Because Black cinema isn’t an asterisk. Black cinema is cinema.
The gap right now and why we built E.N.D. Film Night
Here’s what I’ve been feeling heavy lately
There’s a growing gap between the industry and the artist.
The industry is loud. Metrics. Markets. “Comparable titles.” Safe bets. Algorithms. Trend-chasing.
Meanwhile the artists are right in front of our faces, making brave work, weird work, romantic work, experimental work, work that actually says something and too many people are walking right past it.
And I truly believe: we need artists now more than ever.
Not just as entertainers. As interpreters. As witnesses. As people who can hold up a mirror and say, “Look. This is us. This is what’s happening. This is what we’re becoming.”
That’s why E.N.D. Film Night exists.
Our vision is simple: curate a night that’s entertaining, educational, and full of artistry and use it to expose and connect our communities to the filmmakers already building the new wave.
We just have to pay attention.
